What culture means to Otavaleños

in
by Ullkana Artisans

Culture for Otavaleños means work, love, union, colors, land, fertility. Like most Ecuadorians, we wait 12 months to start new cycles, however, Otavaleños begin their life every Inti Raymi, also known as the festival of the sun, where the fruits, colors and its people are the protagonists of this great Tribute to the pacha mama or land, who is the one who provides their food and who allows each one to live.

Being an Otavaleño, means craftsmanship, handmade, work in the field, details and colors.

All these descriptions of being an Otavaleño are unified in the city's Market, which regularly opens its doors on weekends so that people from other cities and countries can come and buy handicrafts made by them.

Among the best known crafts are ponchos, bedspreads, tablecloths, clothing, leather accessories, even baths of luck or rejection of bad energy, all we see in this market is Otavalo, this is its culture.
